An AI paid a phony $50K invoice and now the money is gone?

It was reported and rumored that recently that a mid-sized consulting firm’s AI assistant processed what seemed like a routine vendor payment request. The email looked legitimate, the amounts matched previous invoices, and the AI even cross-referenced the vendor database, which is a standard procedure to ensure the authenticity of the transaction. The AI's algorithms were designed to verify the sender's identity and validate the request against historical data, making it a reliable tool for financial operations. The story goes, three days later, they discovered the $50,000 had vanished into a sophisticated social engineering attack that exploited their AI’s helpful nature. This attack was not merely a technical breach; it was a carefully orchestrated manipulation that took advantage of human psychology and the trust placed in automated systems. The attackers crafted an email that mimicked the style and format of legitimate requests, enticing the AI to process the payment without raising any flags. The firm later realized that the attackers had conducted extensive research, gathering information about the company’s operations and vendor relationships to make their approach appear credible.
While we were not able to concretely verify this incident, it certainly is plausible and a solid use case to build defenses towards. This use case will only grow in frequency and application and potential impact.
